NewspaperArchive.com (thanks, Resource Shelf) is a database of historical newspapers dating back to 1759. Naturally, a database this size is subscription supported, but they do offer about 50,000 pages in a FREE database that is arranged by subject. It’s actually quite interesting to see which subjects they chose as the most newsworthy. I played with the free search, and was happy with the result. Another decent tool for the public library reference desk. Which reminds me - they are offering their database FREE to schools k-12 and public libraries.
